INTERNATIONAL SUMMER SCHOOL “CURATING IN CONTEXT” 2021/Online
Curating in Context offers critical reflection on diverse socio- political and economic contexts, as well as a possibility to develop curatorial methods to rethink the practices of contemporary (performing) arts in relation to activism, self-organization and critical thinking.
Thematically, Curating in Context is related to the question of the curatorial and its extended understanding which goes beyond black or white box presentation and representation politics. The school analyzes the environment in which art is produced and disseminated, and it focuses on creation of knowledge and opportunities for practitioners who want to pursue their career as curators in the field of performing arts and interdisciplinary.
Curating in Context critically reflects on the perspectives of producing, advocating, initiating diverse models of presenting and articulating art within certain context.
In 2021, Curating in Context will be developed in three modules:
1. Summer School: 29 August – 4 September 2021
2. Mentoring process and developing projects, texts or ideas for a curatorial project: October-December 2021
3. Editing and Publishing of developed projects, texts or ideas for a curatorial project on the web site as an e-publication which will be self-organized by the group (2022)
Curating in Context began as an activity developed as part of the Erasmus + project Curating in context and its partners Tanzfabrik Berlin, Stockholm University of the Arts and University of Zagreb.
This year, the Summer School Curating in Context/2021 is part of a collaboration with Brain Store Project in frame of Performance Situation Room activity of Life Long Burning project, and it is supported by the Ministry of culture, City of Skopje and Creative Europe Program of the European Union.
Curating in Context is co-curated by Biljana Tanurovska–Kjulavkovski and Slavcho Dimitrov.
The 2021 edition of the school, just as the previous one, will be organized online due to the pandemic.
This year we will have the possibility to enroll 15 international participants who would need to dedicate their time and presence on all the modules.
School fee is 500 Euros for three modules, which can be covered by available scholarships for 10 students.

Course teaching methods:
Curating in Context will give insight in diverse relevant and recent themes dealing with the contemporary (performing) arts and the curatorial approach, as well as practical methods in developing a project, text, program, etc.
The course will provide a collaborative environment, enhance self-organized working modes and peer-to peer analyses, mentoring exchange and other approaches that would enable fluidity of knowledge and its production through a process of exchange.
The program includes lectures, seminars, artists and curators’ talks, discussions and interviews, as well as production of curatorial works and co-curatorial publication.
This year’s first module will be related to the following:
- Seminar on the curatorial as participatory;
- Workshop on Curation of Live Events as Construction Sites for Social Change
- Lectures on local policies, institutional and freelance curatorial approaches
- Lectures on diverse curatorial methods related to issues in public politics and performance (feminism, ecology, queer, race), as well as institutions and performance
- Critical approach to producing and presenting
- Artists and curators’ talks (from Europe and beyond)
The summer school is intended for:
Practitioners who would like to pursue their career as curators in the contemporary performing arts or through interdisciplinary approach, and who would like to critically address representation politics and develop curatorial methods related to practices of activism, self-organization and critical reflection.
