Artistic Exchange Residency at STUK Leuven

During this Artistic Exchnge Residency at STUK, Dorota and Mia were exploring how we (people) respond to bodily reactions caused by psychological and/or states of high emotional urgency.

The bodies that we are trying to understand are bodies in distress in shared and common space, bodies that are exposed but not taken care of. The feelings, sensations and states of helplessness that we might be going through, yet in such a fragile moment we might not know how to be there for each other.

Inspired by the structure of a first aid manual, the piece studies its clear procedural language to develop a movement vocabulary for moments of emotional overwhelm. It asks whether we can imagine a manual for emotional and sensory crises.

Dorota Michalak

Artistic Exchange Residency 2026

A Polish choreographer, dancer, somatic educator, and organizer based in Berlin since 2016. She works internationally at the intersection of artistic creation and social engagement through dance and vocal performances, site-specific interventions, transdisciplinary projects, workshops, and group processes. Her work approaches dance and music as experiential modes of knowledge creation, situated at the crossroads of fantasy, physicality, and heritage.

She is interested in the body as a process and an archive, as well as in perceptual fluidity, sensory politics, ecology, the socio-somatic aspects of dance and music-making, and relational and collective forms of artistic practice. Since 2023, she has been a member of the Otucha collective, which focuses on rural Eastern European vocal culture and collective singing. At the moment she is attending BMC® training at Moveus (Germany).
