Johanna Figl

Johanna Figl works primarily as a freelance dance and performance dramaturg, artistic adviser and curator. To date, she has collaborated, among others, with Ulduz Ahmadzadeh, Magdalena Chowaniec, Simon Mayer, Joke Laureyns & Kwint Manshoven (kabinet k.), Ives Thuwis - De Leeuw, Melika Ramic and Martina Rösler (Das ist ja ein Ding, makemake produktionen, STELLA Award 2015 for Outstanding Production for Children). She has also established a second professional strand as a kinesiologist, psychological counsellor and facilitator of systemic constellations. These two fields of work often intersect, for example in the children’s workshop Power Animals.
From 2006 to 2012, she was Artistic Director of SZENE BUNTE WÄHNE – performing arts for young audiences, from 2004 to 2013, she was a board member of ASSITEJ Austria. During this time, she was a strong advocate for the visibility and recognition of performing arts for young audiences and was, among other things, a co-founder of the STELLA Performing Arts Award for Young Audiences and the Jungwild Emerging Artists Award.
Alongside her purely artistic work, Johanna has always had a strong interest in the social and connective aspects of artistic collaboration and has realised a number of socio-cultural projects. She also organises and supports initiatives that enable newcomers to take part in Vienna’s cultural life free of charge.
In 2020, together with Lena Weiderbauer, she founded the community project ZUKKER – Your Neighbourhood Project in St. Pölten, for which she was responsible for the artistic direction. From 2021 until March 2026, Johanna Figl was a member of Vienna’s advisory board for theatre, dance and performance.
Johanna Figl studied Theatre, Film and Media Studies in combination with Journalism and Communication Studies, as well as Cultural and Social Anthropology, in Vienna and Bologna.
