Catol Teixeira

Catol Teixeira performs and creates dances. Born in Porto Alegre and living in Rio de Janeiro since adolescence, Catol has received technical training in ballet, circus, and some contemporary dance approaches. They develop a compositional practice as a means of translation. Their choreographic experimentation with dance serves as a channel for revealing nuances and tactics of coexistence and relationship. Their interest is centered on collaborative processes between artistic practices and personal-collective inquiries, establishing an intimate dialogue in their composition work with kuir (“queer”) and trans-(dis)orientations – to recall a dream and enact an obstinate act of escape from the given-created plot of modernity-coloniality. Their last group choreographic work, Arrebentação, was premiered at Pavillon ADC Geneva in November 2024. Their last solo work, ODE, was premiered in May 2025 at Théâtre Vidy-Lausanne.

Arrebentação - zona de derrama last chapter

In Portuguese, the term “arrebentação” describes the specific area at the shore where the wave breaks. In their eponymous group performance, Brazilian choreographer Catol Teixeira explores this site of a present moment between tension and tranquillity, expands it until it becomes a stage, and invites four other performers to linger there a little longer and investigate it as a group. Opposing impulses, wishes and desires don’t stand in the way of this quest – they are the way; Teixeira thinks of every single body as “a place of passage, of relationship and negotiation between organic-political-cultural forces.” Moving, “leaderless” tableaux come into being between group and isolation, confession and secret, grip and plunge.
