I Have Such a Horrible Voice
How can a brutal, red-on-white matter of fact like monetary debt be turned into a poem? A “spectral corporeal poem” at that? How does ambiguity, obscurity or even the erotic find their way back into the harshly lit life of a person in debt? Performance artist Gui B.B who, by her own account, “has not managed to complete any schooling”, has created a deeply personal, vulnerable, distressing and, at the same time, very funny solo: I Have Such a Horrible Voice is an examination of her own debt, the shame around that debt as well as her belief that both can be transformed into a third thing, something unquantifiable, a sort of euphoria. An intense performance full of sensitivity for the diffuse needs, fears and desires for which the market-and-value thinking of the world rarely leaves any space.
