Gabrielle Levie
Winter Quarters
[8:tension] Young Choreographers' Series 2026
What can a humanoid nutcracker, a burlesque showgirl and a mischievous zebra tell us about our present political circumstances? Gabrielle Levie’s solo Winter Quarters provides insight into the mechanisms of our society of the spectacle, in which bodies that deviate from an artificially constructed norm are demonised and sensationalised, while the delusions of grandeur of a powerful few stay everyone’s daily business. Levie, who calls herself a “performer and props maker”, draws on the aesthetics of traveling circuses of the 19th and early 20th century, which entertained the masses long before the perpetual media noise we know now. Constantly changing characters and costumes, Gabrielle Levie masterfully pulls off a series of instructive sleights of hands.
