Philipp Gehmacher
Philipp Gehmacher studied contemporary dance, choreography and visual arts. He lives and works in Vienna. Gehmacher's artistic works use body and language as forms of expression, the built as well as institutional space, like the object and the sculpture. With these works between black box and white cube, Philipp Gehmacher is represented locally and internationally at theatre festivals and exhibition institutions.
Gehmacher is also a mentor and teacher in various educational institutions. In 2022 he teaches at P.A.R.T.S. in Brussels, at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna and is Valeska Gert Visiting Professor at the FU Berlin.

“Rethinking movement, reconsidering movement. Lots of movement, no more retreat.
Because new movement languages must be found. And to do so, we must understand our bodies again, reclaim them, in order to bring these bodies to dance. Or has that always been the task of ‘contemporary dance’?” (Philipp Gehmacher) The starting material for this new solo is a dance that keeps dancing, allows barely any pauses, that searches for rhythm and steps. After many years, the Viennese choreographer and dancer Philipp Gehmacher is once again turning increasingly towards the pleasure of dancing. Interspersed – a speech, almost a manifesto: How to speak about dance today, how to speak about the madness of this world today? On level -2 at mumok, within the architecture of the abandoned studio of Georgian artist Tolia Astakhishvili, we encounter a virtuosic sensuality that – in a variation on the title of an earlier work by Gehmacher at mumok, Die Dinge der Welt – movingly and anew poses the question of “the bodies of the world”. Heartrending music included. “For what has been and what wants to come”.
