Fanni Somlyai
On The Outset 2026
Fanni Somlyai is a cultural worker, film researcher, and film programmer based in Budapest. Since April 2026, she has been working as a programme organizer at our network partner Műhely Alapítvány (Workshop Foundation), in the frame of On The Outset.
Previously, she was a programme coordinator, editor, and film programmer at the Verzió International Human Rights Documentary Film Festival in Budapest. Before that, she collaborated with the Romedia Foundation, supporting the creation of the Film Section of the RomArchive international digital archive for Roma arts and cultures.
She studied Liberal Arts with a specialization in film and theater history at the University of Pécs, Art Therapy at the John Wesley College, Intercultural Psychology and Education at the Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) in Budapest, and holds a master’s degree in Film Studies from ELTE. She is a Sarajevo Talents alumna (2022), participated in The Flaherty Seminar’s Global Pod in Lisbon (2025), and in the Critical Mentorship Cycle by archival bootcamp/trabajo práctico (2025).
In her research and programming, she engages with documentary cinema, archival practices, and memory rooted in feminist, decolonial, and other-than-human perspectives. She is currently developing Memoria Books, a bilingual micro-publisher that focuses on nonfiction cinema and the discussions around it.
