shining rose
Performance by maria mercedes
The most famous modern language game about the rose was coined by Gertrude Stein: “A rose is a rose is a rose.” But this dispassionate sentence acknowledges only one aspect of the cultural associations surrounding the rose. The Viennese performance duo maria mercedes (Julia Müllner and Camilla Schielin) joined forces with dancer Yoh Morishita for their three-part trio shining rose, building bridges between the life of the rose and the blooms of emotion. As far as this piece is concerned, a rose is a rose is a symbol of sensuality, thorny resistance and the whirlwind of emotions. Both rumour and gossip (in the Middle Ages, “gossip” meant confidante) are based on passing something on. The same applies to the magic of the rose. In shining rose, fantastic costumes dance, colours of passion from red to violet unfold, and longing weaves its way along the “walls of innocence” in white.
maria mercedes consists of Julia Maria Müllner and Camilla Mercedes Schielin. They live and work as dancers and choreographers in Vienna and Stockholm. As a duo, they make choreographies inspired by popular culture and move them into bizarre settings. Both of them are interested in fluctuating encounters between audience and performance. Since autumn of 2020, maria mercedes’s pieces have been shown at WUK, Tanzquartier Wien, Kunstverein Eisenstadt, Haus.Wien, Mühlbauer, Bridging Cologne and KEX Fringe Kyoto in collaboration with Yoh Morishita.

Creative Crossroads Residency
In Camilla Schielin's new research, the She Wolf serves as a carrier for her questions around presence, retreat and sensuality, and suckling as a means of establishing identity. She is a mythological fantasy and founding mother of a “Roman Empire” (here viewed more as a projection surface than actual antiquity), a somewhat esoteric archetype, but also interwoven with pop culture. A figure who transcends boundaries, she is not only flesh and instinct, but also hauntingly charged.
During her stay in Budapest she presents a showing:
1 May 2026,
18:00–19:00
Trafo House Budapest
Admission is free.
